Tony-nominated actor Billy Magnussen and ‘The Fall’ star Jamie Dornan tested Friday opposite Dakota Johnson for the role vacated by Charlie Hunnam.
Tony-nominated actor Billy Magnussen is among a small group of men who have begun testing for the role of Christian Grey in the big-screen adaptation of EL James‘ Fifty Shades of Grey.
Universal Pictures and Focus Features began mobilizing their efforts to fill the male lead after Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam dropped out of the project Oct. 12. Their short list of possibilities includes Magnussen and British actor Jamie Dornan.
Sources say that both Dornan, the 31-year-old star of the UK series The Fall, and the 28-year-old Magnussen, who was nominated for a best featured actor Tony this year for Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, tested with director Sam Taylor-Johnson on Friday. They read opposite female lead Dakota Johnson.
The studio is looking to move fast, given that the film is scheduled to begin production Nov. 1 in order to meet an Aug. 1, 2014 release date.
Magnussen, an American actor, is scheduled to shoot an HBO pilot called The Money in the next few weeks, but sources say his schedule could be worked out for Fifty Shades. He would be a departure for the mostly British production. James, Taylor-Johnson and writer Kelly Marcel all are U.K. natives, as is Hunnam.
Magnussen isn’t afraid to take over a project after another actor falls out. He replaced Jake Gyllenhaal as Rapunzel’s Prince in Disney’s musical Into the Woods.
Magnussen is repped by Bauman, Redanty & Shaul, Dara Gordon at Authentic Management and attorney Robert Offer.
I guess we will soon know “WHO WILL BE CHRISTIAN GREY”….i miss you Charlie :(
The Fifty Shades of Grey casting conundrum continues.
E!Online got word that Billy Magnussen is a new contender in the race to replace Charlie Hunnam as Christian Grey.
Who’s Billy? The 28-year-old blonde hottie most recently was cast as a series regular on HBO’s upcoming drama, The Money.
Not only did he earn a Tony nomination for his work last year in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, but he also appeared shirtless for much of the play. And yes, he sure has a hot Christian Grey-worthy bod!
Magnussen is currently filming the movie adaptation of the Broadway musical Into The Woods, playing Rapunzel’s Prince opposite A-Listers like Johnny Depp,Meryl Streep, Chris Pine, Anna Kendrick and more.
Fifty Shades of Grey is turning into Fifty Rounds of Casting Rumors. With the sudden departure of Charlie Hunnam – who won the role of Christian Grey in early September but dropped out late last week — producers are looking at several different actors to star in the much-anticipated movie adaptation of E.L. James‘ erotic book. And a source tellsUs Weekly they’ve zeroed in on one actor in particular: Australian hunk Luke Bracey.
Bracey, 24, is said to be one of the current frontrunners to replace Hunnam, 33. “Luke is at the top of the list,” the insider tells Us, noting that more chemistry testing is planned with female lead Dakota Johnson.
Bracey is perhaps best known for playing Trey Palmer on the Australian soap Home and Away. He also appeared as Leighton Meester’s love interest in the 2011 romantic comedy Monte Carlo — where he grew close with costar Selena Gomez. Earlier this year, after the Spring Breakers actress split from Justin Bieber, the two were spotted holding hands at a Golden Globes after-party.
Other actors rumored to be in the running for Fifty Shades include Jamie Dornan and Alexander Skarsgard. Dornan, 31, plays Paul Spector in the U.K. series The Fall and previously appeared as Sheriff Graham/The Huntsman on ABC’s Once Upon a Time. Skarsgard, of course, stars as Eric Northman on HBO’s True Blood.
Do you think Luke Bracey would be a good choice for Christian Grey? :(
French-Canadian hottie François Arnaud is the latest thesp to be thrust into the Fifty Shades of Grey casting conversation following the exit over the weekend of Charlie Hunnam, who ultimately had too much on his plate to stick with the role of Christian Grey.
A source confirmed tonight to E! News that the studio has “expressed interest” in Arnaud.
But as insiders also reminded Just Jared, which was first to report the newest name to be linked to the more-hyped-than-ever movie, that no more than talking has occurred at this point and that neither Arnaud nor any of the other guys rumored to be in consideration—including Jamie Dornan and Christian Cooke—have been offered the job.
The 28-year-old Arnaud is best known for playing Cesare Borgia on the recently concluded Showtime drama The Borgias and he appeared in the indie Civil War drama Copperhead with Billy Campbell and Peter Fonda, which had a limited release this summer.
According to IMDb, his birth name is François Barbeau and he graduated from the Conservatoire d’art dramatique in his native Montreal.
And according to our eyeballs, Arnaud has brooding eyes, thick hair and good bone structure. We’ll see what E.L. James has to say about him.
What do you think of François Arnaud as Christian Grey? Who’s your favorite Charlie Hunnam runner-up so far?!
FORMER Calvin Klein model Jamie Dornan has been tipped as the favourite to replace Charlie Hunnam in the forthcoming film adaptation of Fifty Shades Of Grey. Hunnam – who was set to play protagonist Christian Grey in the movie of EL James’s bestselling book - pulled out earlier this week due to his “immersive television schedule” leaving the role open again.
Dornan has previously secured small roles in films including Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, starring Kirsten Dunst, but confirmed his acting talent with the starring role in BBC drama The Fall, in which he played a serial killer to critical acclaim.
The Northern Irish actor is by no means the only player linked to the role, however, with Matt Bomer, Alexander Skarsgard, Theo James and Christian Cooke also reportedly still being considered.
Would you like to see Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey ???? :(
As the hunt continues for Christian Grey’s role (The Man lead in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey), fans shouldn’t be surprised if Paul Walker’s name is thrown into the running.
ET Canada’s Natasha Gargiulo caught up with the 39-year-old actor on the set of his new film Brick Mansions, out next year, where he explained what it would take for him to play the bondage-loving businessman.
“It would be really important to have incredible chemistry with whoever the girl was and it couldn’t be something you would have to force,” Paul said. “I think the people need to spend a lot of time together and intimate time would probably help, you know?”
I have seen “The Man of Steel” twice. Partially because I think it’s good, but mostly because two hours drooling over Henry Cavill is how I want to spend my time! Don’t judge! I have always been a big advocate for Henry Cavill to be Christian Grey. Then I moved onto Ryan Gosling. And now I am right back where I began, HENRY CAVILL. But don’t let my words try to convince you he is right for the part of the sexy older billionaire, a fan made “Fifty Shades Movie” trailer by xVampiliciouSx does all the persuading for me:
Nevermind that Twilight’s Ashley Greene is in it as Anastasia Steele. Even though I thought the fan that directed her in it di a fabulous job! Tell me what you thought in the comments. Can’t get enough fan made trailers? Watch a whole lot more of them here.
